Occupational experience

Standards Norway: From 2006-01-01 I am employed full time as Project Manager at Standards Norway, where I have been affiliated part time since 2003-01-01 (http://www.standard.no/). (Before the establishment of Standards Norway in November 2003 my affiliation was with the standardizing organization Norwegian Technology Centre.) I am working with national and international ICT standardization, and also with national and international standardization related to language resources. Among other things I take care of secretariat functions for CEN/ISSS Cultural Diversity Focus Group (CDFG) (see under http://www.cenorm.be/ and http://www.cdfg.org/).

Independent consultancy: From November 2001 I have established a consultancy service for language resources, terminology and lexicography. I also translate LSP texts into Norwegian (from English, Swedish, Danish, German). Through my “micro publishing house” elexi (http://www.elexi.no/) I publish dictionaries. From 2006-01-01 the consultancy activities have been reduced considerably since I am employed full time at Standards Norway.

The Norwegian Council for Technical Terminology (Rådet for teknisk terminologi): From 1982 at RTT (http://www.rtt.org/) on hourly basis, from 1985 in part time position, from 1987 as acting general secretary (full time), from 1990 as director. As the director of a small institution I have the responsibility of administrative routines, including economy. However, most of the time is spent on scientific activities, e.g. participation in dictionary projects, advice on terminological issues, all aspects of computerization of dictionary material, publication of terminology and other kinds of information on paper and in electronic form, including Internet publication. The foundation RTT ceases to exist in November 2001.

Language consultant for the Norwegian Standards Association (Norges Standardiseringsforbund): From 1985-10-01 until 1992 employed part time by NSF (http://www.standard.no/) with office at the Norwegian Language Council (http://www.språkrådet.no/ or http://www.sprakradet.no/). Examined all Norwegian-language draft Norwegian Standards.

The Norwegian Term Bank (Norsk termbank) at the University of Bergen: From 1979-03 until 1984-12 employed at the Norwegian Term Bank (previously affiliated with the Project for computational linguistics, now a part of the Humanities Information Technology Research Programme (http://www.hit.uib.no/hit/)) in full position. Developed computational methodologies for terminological materials.

The Norwegian Lexicographical Institute (Norsk leksikografisk institutt, NLI) at the University of Oslo: Worked on part-time basis with lexicographical and computational methodologies with a number of internal and external projects at the Institute:

s  Norsk landbruksordbok [Norwegian Dictionary of Agriculture] (see under Publications): co-editor from 1970, affiliated with NLI on part-time basis from 1972 until 1979, in total corresponding to 2.5 years full time.

s  Norsk teknisk ordbok [Norwegian Dictionary of Technology]: worked part time from 1976 until the publication of the first edition in 1981 and in connection with the second edition in 1984 (published by Det Norske Samlaget).

s  Computerization of several dictionaries, e.g.:
Alf Hellevik, Nynorsk ordliste (from 1978; from 1982 directly in co-operation with Det Norske Samlaget).
Bokmålsordboka and Nynorskordboka (from 1978-11 until 1985; all parts of computerization).

The title of the committee was until 2000 Terminology (principles and coordination). The title was then changed to Terminology and other language and content resources. I have participated in all Sub-committees and a number of Working Groups.

Translations and articles

Translation:

During the period 1977–1981 I translated text books for primary and secondary schools for a number of Norwegian publishing houses. Most of the translations were from Norwegian Bokmål to Norwegian Nynorsk (in all about 5000 pages), but I have also translated books from Swedish to Norwegian, and a number of texts from English to Norwegian. During the same period I also worked as language consultant for Norwegian publishing houses.

During the period 1982–2001 I translated some texts, in particular “terminology-intensive” texts and lists of terms.

From 2002 I am again involved in translation projects, although to a lesser extent than previously.
